Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large red onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Optional: peppercorns, garlic cloves, red pepper flakes, or fresh herbs for added flavor
Instructions
- Peel and thinly slice the red onions using a sharp knife or mandoline for even slices.
- In a small saucepan, combine the vinegar, water, sugar, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar and salt dissolve completely. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Place the sliced onions into a clean jar or airtight container. Add any optional spices or herbs at this stage.
- Pour the warm brine over the onions, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Seal the jar tightly and gently shake. Let sit at room temperature for at least 1 hour. For best flavor, refrigerate for 2-4 hours or overnight.
Notes
- Use thinly sliced onions for quicker pickling and better flavor infusion.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Always use a clean utensil to remove onions to prevent spoilage.
- Feel free to customize the flavor with additional spices or herbs.
