Ingredients
Scale
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm milk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- Optional fillings: cheese, ham, spinach, or jam
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by combining warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add melted butter and beaten egg to the yeast mixture, then pour into the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball and place on a greased baking tray, spacing evenly. Optionally, add fillings before shaping.
- Cover with a damp cloth and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the rolls with milk or beaten egg. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from oven, cool slightly, and serve warm with your favorite spreads.
Notes
- Ensure the milk is warm but not hot to activate the yeast effectively.
- Thorough kneading is key for gluten development and fluffy rolls.
- For a glossy finish, brush the rolls with an egg wash before baking.
- You can prepare the dough ahead of time and refrigerate overnight for fresh morning rolls.
