A classic patty melt made with juicy beef, melty cheese, caramelized onions, and toasted rye bread for a perfect comfort food meal.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss or American cheese
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat and cook the sliced onions until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. Form ground beef into four patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes per side.
  4. Meanwhile, butter one side of each bread slice. Place two slices, buttered-side down, on the skillet. Top each with a patty, a slice of cheese, and caramelized onions. Cover with remaining bread slices, buttered-side up.
  5. Cook until the bread is toasted and the cheese melts, about 3-4 minutes per side. Slice in half and serve hot.
